How Dehydration Affects Your Spine (and What You Can Do About It)

At ProWellness Chiropractic & Rehab, we talk a lot about movement, alignment, and recovery—but one of the most overlooked factors in spinal health is something simple: hydration.

Most people think about water in terms of energy, skin, or overall health. But your spinal discs—the cushions between each vertebra—are actually some of the most water-dependent structures in your entire body. And when you’re dehydrated, your back can feel it.

Why Your Spinal Discs Need Water

Each disc in your spine acts as a shock absorber, helping you move comfortably throughout the day. The center of each disc is made up of a gel-like material that is about 70-90% water.

When your body is well hydrated, these discs stay plump and resilient.
When you’re not, they can become thinner, less flexible, and less able to absorb stress—leading to stiffness, tightness, or that “off” feeling in your back.

What Happens Throughout the Day

Your discs naturally lose water as you go about your day—especially with prolonged sitting, standing, or repetitive movement.

At night, while you sleep, they rehydrate and recover. (It’s actually why you’re slightly taller in the morning!)

But if your body doesn’t have enough fluid available—or if you’re staying compressed for long periods without movement—your discs don’t fully bounce back.

Signs Your Body (and Spine) May Be Dehydrated

Dehydration doesn’t always show up as obvious symptoms. In many cases, it looks like:
• Morning stiffness
• Tightness after sitting
• A dull, lingering ache in your back or neck
• Feeling less flexible or “compressed”

Over time, this can contribute to increased wear and tear on your spine.

Simple Ways to Support Your Spine

Small, consistent habits can make a big difference:
• Drink water regularly throughout the day (not just all at once)
• Take breaks from sitting—move every 30-60 minutes
• Stay active to promote circulation and disc hydration

Need an Extra Boost? IV Hydration Can Help

At ProWellness, we also offer IV hydration therapy, which can be a powerful way to support your body—especially if you’re already feeling run down or dehydrated.

Our IVs deliver fluids, electrolytes, and essential nutrients directly into your bloodstream, helping to:
• Rehydrate your body more efficiently than oral intake alone
• Improve energy and recovery
• Support muscle and joint function
• Help reduce feelings of fatigue, headaches, and overall sluggishness

For patients dealing with chronic tightness, long workdays, workouts, or even illness, IV hydration can be a great complement to chiropractic care, physical therapy, and massage.
