For many patients with long-standing joint pain or acute injuries, platelet-rich plasma or PRP therapy may provide the relief you’ve been looking for.

What Is It?

Platelet rich plasma therapy is a form of regenerative medicine used to encourage the natural healing process within your body. PRP works by amplifying the natural growth factors your body uses to heal tissues such as tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and muscles. PRP consists of two elements: plasma and a concentrated number of platelets. Plasma is the liquid portion of your blood. Platelets function as the natural reservoir for growth factors that are essential to repair injured tissues. Growth factors trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration. By injecting PRP into the injured tissue, we can increase the concentration of growth factors, aiding in the healing process.

Who Can It Help?

PRP can often be beneficial in many chronic and acute conditions, such as:

  • Arthritis, especially in the hips, knees or shoulders
  • Sports injuries
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Muscle strain/sprains
  • Chronic trigger points
  • Tears in tendons or ligaments
  • Meniscus tears
  • Chronic tendonitis
  • Chronic SI joint pain

The time it takes to experience relief varies depending on factors such as the severity of your condition, how long you’ve had it, comorbidities, and your age. While some patients notice an immediate improvement, most notice a difference within a few weeks.

What to Expect

Following the injection, you may feel a notable increase in pain for a few days, but this is a normal part of the healing process. The pain intensity becomes less each day as functional mobility and general functional ability increase along with endurance and strength. You will notice gradual improvements 2-6 weeks after PRP treatment.
Some patients report ongoing improvements 6-9 months after PRP treatment. Ultrasound and MRI images have shown definitive tissue repair occurring following PRP therapy. By treating injured tissues before the damage progresses, surgical intervention may be avoided.
