Is My Ankle Sprain Serious? How to Tell What Needs Attention

ankle pain outside on stepsMaybe you missed a step, landed awkwardly, or rolled your foot on uneven ground. Now your ankle is sore, and you’re wondering whether to wait it out or have someone take a look.

Most ankle sprains involve ligaments that have been stretched or injured. With a milder sprain, you may notice swelling, tenderness, and stiffness that gradually ease over the following days. Seeing steady improvement is generally an encouraging sign.

Signs Your Ankle Needs a Closer Look

Some symptoms warrant an evaluation rather than simply waiting to see what happens:

  • Difficulty taking four steps on the injured foot
  • Sharp pain when pressing the bony bumps on either side of the ankle
  • Swelling or bruising that spreads quickly into the foot and toes
  • An ankle that feels loose or gives way
  • Little or no improvement after about a week

A crooked-looking ankle, or a foot that becomes numb, pale, or cold, calls for urgent or emergency medical attention rather than a regular appointment.

Why a Check-Up May Be Worth It

An ankle that doesn’t regain good stability after a sprain may be more vulnerable to future problems. Changes in the way you walk can also place different demands on the knee or hip.

There’s another reason not to brush off an ankle that isn’t improving: some fractures can initially resemble a sprain. Having the injury examined can help clarify what you’re dealing with and whether imaging or another type of care is needed.

What Happens When You Come In

At ProWellness Chiropractic and Rehab, Dr. Mark Johnson and the physical therapy team examine the ankle’s movement, stability, tender areas, and balance. They’ll also ask how the injury happened and what you’ve noticed since.

From there, the next step depends on what the examination shows. That might mean imaging or a referral when needed, or a plan focused on restoring movement, strength, and stability. Patients from Cold Spring, Alexandria, and surrounding communities can come directly to us without a referral.
